Merry Christmas – that’s a wrap for 2020.

Well everyone, 2020 is drawing to a close. And we’re pretty sure most of us are rather happy about that. It certainly has been a year for everyone to remember and for us here at Watch The Dot that’s no exception. The pandemic has brought it’s challenges and forced everyone to work in a different way. We’ve been very  fortunate that we’ve been able to access our office for the most part only working from home for a short period during the first lockdown.  

There have been some real positives to come out of this strange and unpredictable year, however. Recently Claire has joined the team and will be in the office at least three days a week from the new year. And as a result we’ve managed to expand our offerring as a business, branching more firmly into the area of digital marketing. We’ve continued to grow and it’s been a pleasure to take care of our long standing loyal clients, as well as welcome our new ones on board.

From 1.30 today (18/12/20) we will be out of office until 04/01/21. We will of course be available through our usual support channels for any emergencies. 

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our clients for their custom this year.  We very much  look forward to working with you in 2021. Until then stay safe and have a very merry Christmas.

We’re Recruiting – Junior Technical Administrator, Cambridge

Junior Technical Administrator

Type: Full Time (will consider Job Share)
Hours: 9am – 5:30pm
Based: In our office near Cambridge
Salary: £17.5k pa

Job Description

Our small but incredibly busy web development and hosting business is looking for someone to join the team in a junior capacity to assist with the day to running and management of all of our technical activities. This varied role will rely heavily on your existing technical skills as well as your ability to learn quickly. You’ll need to bring value to the business from week one and be ambitious like us. We will want to grow your skills quickly and you’ll need to be flexible and quick of mind. You’ll talk to clients regularly on the phone and occasionally attend meetings, so you’ll need to scrub up OK and be comfortable talking to people.

Tasks include:
  • Assisting with support requests relating to our web hosting and domain services
  • Taking on small web development projects for clients
  • Troubleshooting client problems
  • Assisting with our internal technical projects
  • Administration of client accounts
Your current skillset

In order to be able to fit into the team and do this job effectively, you will already need a few essential skills~:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent numeracy
  • Track record of commitment to working
  • Technically competent with an excellent understanding of the internet
  • A proven interest in working with internet technologies – a college project or personal website for example
  • Ability to use Office applications without effort – you’ll have used Word and Excel or equivalent many times
  • Staying power

There’s a few other things that would make you perfect for the job. If you have any of these skills on top of the above, you’re definitely the sort of person we’re looking for. You’ll be trained in these anyway, but having them will give you a head start:

  • IT Qualifications
  • WordPress experience
  • Understand of HTML
  • Understand of CSS
  • Understand of PHP
  • Understand of SQL
  • Familiarity with Linux, Apache, FTP and other web server tools

    Design & Build a Website using WordPress

    Commencing on the 20th January, Christian Mayne will be once again teaching the popular WordPress for Beginners course at Hills Road Sixth Form College in Cambridge.

    Course Overview

    WordPressLearn how to use WordPress to produce attractive, well laid-out and highly functional web sites. WordPress is one of the World’s leading and widely used web Content Management Systems. Despite being simple to use, WordPress is also an extremely powerful online publishing platform and is used by some of the most high profile websites in the World. This course is aimed at those new to WordPress or those looking to setup or start managing a WordPress website for the first time. Your tutor will take you from the basics of setting up a WordPress site and adding content and images, through to theme installation, site enhancement with plugins, theme modification and user administration. You will gain a thorough understanding of the components which make up WordPress, how these components are used and managed, and tricks you can use to quickly and simply improve your WordPress website. No prior web design experience is required, but you should be comfortable using a PC and Web Browser.

    Learning Outcomes

    By the end of the course, using practical hands-on tuition, you will have an understanding of the following features and techniques:

    • Setting Up WordPress from Scratch
    • Creating Pages and Posts
    • Managing WordPress Menus
    • WordPress Widgets and Sidebars
